Our Review

Otis Redding’s first album, Pain In My Heart, contains his initial hits — the pleading title ballad and the equally wrenching “These Arms of Mine.” It also offers a good overview of the tricks he’d picked up from the likes of Little Richard (on the original “Hey Hey Baby” and a cover of “Lucille”), Bobby Bland (the strolling “I Need Your Loving”), longtime role model Sam Cooke (“You Send Me”), and even the Kingsmen (although he’s forced to come up with his own lyrics for this version of “Louie Louie”). Whether Redding is begging for a would-be lover’s mercy or providing a worthy frat-party soundtrack, Pain showcases the roots of the man who remains one of soul’s most touchingly human singers.

Genre: R&B/Soul
Years Active: '60s

One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern "deep soul" — hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. He was also the most consistent exponent of the Stax sound, cutting his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His death at the age of 26 was tragic not just because he seemed on the verge of breaking through...
